About The Sudan Knowledge Centre (SKC)

The Sudan Knowledge Centre (SKC) is a Swiss-based, independent, apolitical, and not-for-profit non-governmental organisation (NGO) established according to Article 60 of the Swiss Civil Code of 1901. SKC is individual membership organisation that brings together a panoply of individuals from different backgrounds—intellectuals, human rights activists, and pro-democracy activists from Sudan and other parts of the world and engages them in a process to promote human rights and fundamental liberties, advocate for peace, justice, and non-discrimination, and support efforts to end humanitarian crises in Sudan. SKC is a policy advocacy NGO that carries out its work through dialogue, research, and documentation on issues that affect life in Sudan, taking advantage of the expertise of its core members, who are persons of solid knowledge on matters concerning Sudan combined with academic and professional experience in vital fields. SKC targets consolidating the presence of Sudanese and Sudan-focused civil society at different levels, strengthening their advocacy efforts, and making quality contributions thereto.

SKC accords special attention to its actions at the regional and international levels on matters concerning Sudan, including the United Nations and the African Union, where important Sudan-focused measures are entertained. Among other relevant activities, SKC participates on a regular basis at the triannual sessions of the UN Human Rights Council as well as the biannual ordinary sessions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. This is necessary as it has been noticed that matters concerning Sudan are often addressed without the participation or knowledge of the civil society groups concerned, or at best the presence of those groups appears to be nominal. In addition to enhancing the capacity of its partners, SKC makes use of its presence in Switzerland and its proximity to the city of Geneva—the custodian of international humanitarian law in the world and the global capital of human rights—to exclusively raise the human rights practices and concerns of the victims of violations thereof at the regional and international forums.
